For anyone who wants to learn and master guitar, it is important to learn a little bit about the different components of a guitar. This is the reason why most guitar teaching sources of guitar instructors begin their guitar lessons with the topic – “What are the different parts of a guitar?”, because knowledge of the different components of a guitar is very much crucial for the correct handling and proper maintenance of your guitar.
So, make yourself acquainted with the different components of this wonderful instrument – Headstock - The headstock or head of the guitar is the part that is found at the farthest point from the body of the guitar and it is located on the edge of the neck of your guitar. The guitar head holds the tuning pegs and is available in all kinds of different shapes and sizes. Tuners/ Machines/ Machine Heads – These help in maintaining the tautness of the guitar strings. The string is attached to the bridge at one end and to the head on the other end, with the help of these tuners.
The tuners alter the pitch of the guitar strings. While buying a guitar, ensure that the tuning pegs are turning smoothly and evenly. If they don’t, they probably are not of very good quality. However, if you buy a good quality guitar, then the tuners that come along with the guitar will definitely be of good quality. Nut - The nuts help in maintaining the tautness and tension that you wish to create in the guitar strings. The nuts are provided with threads to enable tightening of the strings, with a simple rotation of the nuts. The nuts are either made up of plastic, bone, graphite, metal, brass, or any strong and sturdy medium. Fret Board/ Fingerboard - It is a long piece of wood that is attached to the body of the guitar on one end and the head of the guitar on the other end.
The fret board is laid over the neck as a separate piece of strong hard wood and is provided with frets, which are evenly placed transversely over the entire fret board. When a player presses down upon a particular fret strongly, then the sound of the note produced is quite different. This difference in the sound quality is different owing to the shortening of the guitar string’s “vibrating length” which imparts a higher pitch to the notes produced.
